Making a Wooden Pendant #1: My wood pendant process
I figured I would put this out there in case anyone was interested to know what I do to make these wooden pendants. Its not complicated. Anyone can do it with their scraps. I personally like to use burl wood but if you have less figured wood you can pair it up with contrasting colors and shapes for a nice effect. ANYWAY, Picture time. I skipped the wood selection process in the photos. I was making this one for a friend and she picked the piece, marked the spot she wanted and then I took over. Made it in about 30-40 minutes. Apple burl was the wood. That last photo is not the same pendant. She took it home with her so I didnt get to properly photograph it but that one is a bit similar. Hazel Wood for Eczema?
So, it’s been a couple of weeks, and she’s been recovery from a HUGE reaction to some nail polish she put on her skin (long story), but in any case, her skin seems to be improving! She hasn’t asked for lotion for two days (a miracle in and of itself). Has anyone else had long term success with hazel wood jewelry? It’s supposed to neutralize excess body acidity by soaking it up basically, you have to change out the necklace once it gets saturated. What do you think?

Fabric and Wood Bead necklaces
I’ve been totally inspired by all the wood jewelry I’ve been seeing. I bought an awesome wood bead necklace from Old Navy last week (and btw, when did Old Navy start selling awesome jewelry??) and was inspired to create some original new accessories of my own using wood craft beads and fabric! I started off by getting a great variety of Knit fabrics. Think Jersey and cotton Tshirt fabric. Fabrics that have a stretch and when cut don’t fray! These craft beads are perfect. They are sold in a variety pack and come in a variety of stains and sizes and are sealed and shiny! For this first version I used my rotary cutter and cut 3 long (the width of my fabric) 1 inch strips of fabric. I used a metal skewer to help guide the fabric through the beads. In between each bead I tied a knot. I then braided and knotted the ends and secured the ends with Ribbon Clasps. *******

What you’ll need: Cardboard Paper or Cardstock Scissors or Craft Knife Glue or Doublestick Tape Paint or fabric For Necklace Bust: 1. Draw a template on paper or cardstock, I made several of these so made my template on cardstock and it has held up very well. Cut out. 2. Trace your pattern onto your cardboard. Cut out. It’s up to you how to cover it, you can spray paint it, brush paint, or cover it with fabric or felt. I’ve done all three and they all look good. This example was brush painted with black acrylic craft paint. 3. To make the stand, cut a strip of cardboard and score three times: 1/4 inch up from one edge, 3/4 inches up from that and then half way up the remaining distance. Fold inward and attach small flap to the edge that folds down to create a triangle. Attatch to the back of your bust with glue or tape. For Bracelet/ Ring Display: 1. Trace your hand with fingers splayed and up your arm a bit onto your cardboard and cut out. Paint.

As promised, the second part of my brooch collection :) . My two wonderful Made by White brooches (not enough, need more ;) ) and a tiny Hema toadstool. On the left another old lady brooch from my mom (yikes I steel a lot of things from her ;) ), and two thrifted rose brooches. On the right a thrifted purple horse (looks a little like a Dala Horse, which I love!), a bow brooch that belonged to my grandma and the brooch with the purple/green stones is my oldest possession and belonged to my great-grandmother. The puzzle piece deer and swans are from Lisa Manuels. I bought the little folklore deer brooch at the ‘Sprookjeskamer’ (fairytaleshop) and how could I forget ‘Women like simple things… ;) ’ which is also thrifted. The entire lot! Wow, thank you guys so much for all your support regarding my blog designs. I am so excited about this new adventure, and can’t wait to have my website up and running (it should be sometime this week! I will keep you updated). Anyway…You’re not going to believe this. I have an actual craft to share. Crazy, right? It feels weird, but I think I like it. I’ve missed the ol’ blog. Today I did a really sad thing. I packed up all my craft supplies so that we could get started on the nursery. The nursery part is exciting, but having all my craft supplies in a box and nowhere to put them? Not such a happy thing. Hopefully they find a new home soon. So anyway, we came to my parent’s house for dinner tonight and my mom just knew I needed to do a little crafting to cheer me up. So, she showed me a little fabric brooch that she bought at a cute local boutique and we decided to try and make one like it. They turned out really cute, if I do say so myself.

A little felted brooch
I finished another little felted brooch today. The image of the two vintage girls posing as angels were irresistible and I had to make something with it. I attached a little silver locked so the new owner could personalize it. I added some lavender buds between the layers for a sweet surprise. Just squeeze and enjoy the relaxing scent. I spent the morning shopping with mom. Part of her Christmas gift was a clothing shopping spree. She lost over 30 pounds during her surgery ordeal. Her clothes hung on her like rags. Now she is looking and feeling really spiffy. After a quick lunch we headed home with the sun shining brightly and smiles on our faces. Tomorrow I finish the rental painting then have a break for a week before starting the next. After painting is finished all my attention will be focused on an exciting project for crazy quilters to be released in the spring…no, it isn’t a book just yet

Because I like to play around with them I never glue them to getter or attach them in a way that I won’t be able to re-use them… Here I just picked a few I liked and twisted them together and pinned them in my hair using regular hairpins and clips. btw. Sizzix Fresh Vintage Blog Hop: DIY Flower Brooch
Sizzix has always made me so happy. Fifteen years years ago, I was a student aid using the Ellison machine to cut letters for the bulletin board. Eight years later I got the original Sizzix machine—the red one with the handle that went up and down. And just this year I got the Big Shot! Rolling in style, right here! Many thanks to sweet Eileen Hull who asked if I wanted to do the Fresh Blog hop. I was thrilled! For my Fall Poppy brooch, I used the Sizzix #9 Flower die. This die punches three different flower shapes that you can stack or use alone. It’s pretty much a party when you cut your fabric. If you want to make your own Fall Poppy brooch, you will need: fabric, buttons, Katiedids, Mod Podge, bicone Swarovski crystals 4mm, and of course the #9 Flower die. Cut four different fabrics into flowers–I ran the die through twice per pattern for a total of eight passes (24 flowers) and yes I had a few extras (yay!). Coat each flower front and back with Mod Podge.

Supplies: teacup stamp, Speedball Oil-Based Block Printing Ink/fabric paint, 26 Ga. wire (thin wire), scissors, thread (light brown for the tea and another color to match your fabric), needle, felt, pencil, pen, pin-back, plastic bag or stuffing. Sip 1: Stamp teacup onto fabric. Note: I carved my stamp out of linoleum. Sip 2: Shape wire to look like steam. Wrap tip of wire around a pen to get a curved end. On The Way Home I Stopped To Look
Ruby and I went shopping this morning after an appointment and discovered where all of the etched glassware in town is being sold! If you haven’t been to Relics, Missouri’s largest antique mall (or it will be when it’s actually full of vendors), it’s worth a look. There’s a lot of big vintage walnut furniture for antique prices but there are plenty of other booths full of vintage eye candy from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. I also picked up a beautiful feed sack bedspread (the floral background), brass and beaded necklace, and wooden spools of thread in beautiful colors. I’m in the process of decluttering our house so thrifting might seem to be working against that process but I just unloaded a bunch of good vintage at RVA and some regular boring stuff at Red Racks so I’m sticking to my ‘one in, one out’ guideline pretty well! I’m on a mission to only have things in our home that I’m smitten with when it’s an option (portable dishwashers can’t be helped, ya’ll) and most of things happen to be vintage.
