Dzi bead
They share some of the dzi bead patterns, but instead of agate, the Phumtek are generally made from petrified opalized palm wood while Pyu beads are often made of red or orange carnelian with some thin white line alkali etching. Ancient Roman agate beads as well as etched [[Bactria]]n, [[Middle East]]ern, [[China|Chinese]], [[Afghan]], [[Yemen]]i, and [[India]]n agate & carnelian beads made their way into [[Tibet]]. All these are considered ”chung dzi” by Tibetans (in Tibetan, “chung” means ordinary or common). They are less valuable then pure eyed dzi, yet they are highly treasured amongst Tibetans and also considered a variety of dzi. ==See also== ==See also==

Book review: Tapestry Bead Crochet
I’ve never found bead crochet to be particularly intimidating, but that’s probably since learning to crochet was one of the first fiber arts I tackled as a child. However, when I saw the cover of Ann Benson’s new book, Tapestry Bead Crochet , I thought to myself, “Yeah right…like I could ever do that!” Well, now that I’ve read through it, I think I probably could! Ann makes it look easy,Shamballa Bracelets, and if clear photos and illustrations aren’t enough, she includes a bonus dvd to walk you through the techniques. No matter how complicated the bead pattern looks, Tapestry Bead Crochet only uses three crochet stitches: chain, slip, and single crochet. Come on! We can all do that :-) This book is another beautiful Lark publication, so you know that the quality will be high. If you’ve been thinking about learning a new technique, this might be just the book for you! A funny thing happened when beading
I must be on a creative kick. I made a couple of knitted collars this past week. Knitting is more relaxing than beading, because there is less thought put into coming up with a pattern. Once I decide on a pattern for beading, it is relaxing too. Sort of, anyway! Either one I can do in the midst of family life.

Kick spring into high gear with a patterned purse
I tried to make this list without any animal prints since we’ve already done several posts on that trend, but the purple and gunmetal iteration of the Mulberry Bayswater Belt Bag is just too cool to resist. Warm weather? Cold weather? It doesn’t matter; this is a year-round favorite. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $425. You won’t find many handmade bags at this price point, and the neo-Native American pattern and beaded finish of the Paul and Joe Perlee Handmade Beaded Bag fit the season’s print and texture trends to a T. My recommendation, though, is to find a retailer that sells bags actually made by Native Americans so that you can get the look and contribute the the sustenance of the culture simultaneously. I used them to type WIN and FREE as pumpkins in this post. Cute, huh? ? Droste Effect Filter for the free Pixel Bender Photoshop plug-in I told you about two weeks ago . The Droste effect is an image effect named after ads created for the Droste Dutch cocoa company. In 1904 it produced packaging for its cocoa product showing a woman carrying a tray with a box of cocoa and a cup on it. A small version of the package appeared on the cocoa box on the tray and so on and so on C each version of the image being successively smaller than the last. I used it to make the spiral and fractal designs from this photo of a passion flower in our yard. ? Halloween Beading Patterns from About.com. ? Halloween Needlepoint Patterns from About.com. ? The Kaleidoscope
MAGPIE TALES http://magpietales.blogspot.com/2011/04/mag-63.html chose the illustration. THE KALEIDOSCOPE? There was a time When I looked at life Through my kaleidoscope. Everything was neatly segmented. The blues revolved around the edges, The greens drew neat triangles, The pinks and reds merged Symmetrically. Make a turn And everything fell into place Predictably. I knew where I was going. I knew it was all up to me; I was in charge. I would decide what, when, where. It would all work out. Those with messy lives Had only themselves to blame. And then you left me. And my kaleidoscope Broke. The beads are there But the patterns are misbehaving. And a broken kaleidoscope Can never be fixed. * ————————————————.

Making Sundance Jewelry
In this project “Reflecting Pool” by Brittany Ketcham, the mood is relaxed because very few shapes were used and the design atmosphere allowed for the beads’ patterns and textures to stand out. Keeping the focus to the front by adding simple leather ties also reads as easy. Simplicity is Style. We don’t always have to create complicated projects to be successful. Anyone on your gift list would love to receive something as special as this. So, enjoy the project!

The Glass Bead Game
by John Michael Greer When I proposed in last week’s Archdruid Report post that readers write science fiction stories about the crisis of industrial society, I wasn’t thinking of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke as a potential author. Still, a speech of his that made the New York Times a few days back suggests that he’s got a sufficiently wild imagination for the job. In that speech, while trying to explain why shoveling trillions of dollars of money into the coffers of the banks that caused the Great Recession hasn’t done anything besides enriching bankers, Bernanke insisted that what’s wrong with the economy is that Americans are irrationally depressed about it. That, he claimed, is what’s keeping consumers from engaging in the binge spending that will get the economy moving again. You have to hand it to the man; it’s an extraordinary leap of fantasy. Out there in the real world, after all, a sixth of the US population is living below the poverty line.

Ten Days of Giveaways: Day Three: Garden and Glass Beads
Welcome to day three of the Ten Days of Giveaways here at the blog! The last two days have featured brand new work, but today I am looking back. I received a note from a good friend and customer today who said that she was first a little nervous when I started to change my style, but she really likes what I am doing now. She was probably referring to when I started being inspired by Steampunk, which is a critical point in the last few years, where my work started to change pretty drastically. Before Steampunk, I was doing much softer, organic, and natural designs, with some fun pop culture kinda cute designs mixed in. Much of my recent work has been more industrial and based on hardware and textures and creating a different feeling. The change seems like a natural and gradual transition to me, because the work I am doing now is very satisfying and is something that I have been seeking for many years.

Interview with Loupiac, Lampwork Art bead artist Florence Sauerbrey
Let me introduce you to Florence Sauerbrey. Flo is a magnificent Lampworker who creates beads. Her Etsy store is called Loupiac . I have been in love with her work for a long time. I know you’ll love her too. Enjoy this little virtual interview! 1. Who are you, and what do you create? I am Florence Sauerbrey aka Loupiac on Etsy. I came from France 9 years ago to marry that wooden boat builder man of mine. I make lampwork beads with glass rods that I melt with a torch. Sometimes I make jewelry with my beads, wear a piece once or a couple of times and then it disappears in my drawer forever because I don’t wear -nor do I sell.

Bead for Life/Gifts for Life
Yesterday I set you up with a little teaser in which I told you about the EPIC EXTRAVAGANZA beginning on Monday here on the EO and over at OMyFamily The inspiration behind this event is Bead for Life , an organization truly worthy of our support as it helps women support themselves and their families by making beautiful beaded jewelry from recycled paper, shea butter soap and peppermint lip balm… The story of how Bead for Life came to be is astonishing and powerful. The way this organization continues to support the women (and men) of Uganda (and other parts of the world) is nothing short of redemptive and life-changing. No, scratch that. Life.

The Journey of a Bead C Czech Glass
Czech glass beads are beautiful additions to jewelry designs, but not too many people know how a bead comes into being. These beads are still made in the Czech Republic the same way they have been for hundreds of years. Take a journey into the makings of one special bead. Early Years (250 B.C.) : A piece of glass originally was created by lampworking. An oil lamp is used to melt glass around a mandrel, a thin metal rod around which a glass bead is shaped. When the mandrel is removed, it forms the hole in the bead. Starting in 900 A.D., these handmade beads were placed in graves. Middle Years (1500s): Cottage industries began showing up in Jablonec, Stanovsko and Bedrichov the present-day Czech Republic. These industries made beads for larger jewelry factories. Beginning in the 1800s, manufacturers developed special molds and machines to produce pressed glass beads. Pressed glass beads are made with hot softened glass being pressed into a hand-operated or mechanized mold.

Roll out the fun with paper beads and baskets
Some of the paper beads you can buy in craft and jewelry stores are made by women in developing countries. A nonprofit group called BeadforLife, in Boulder, Colo., for instance, trains Ugandan women in paper bead-making, then buys their finished jewelry for sale in the United States. Besides beading, the Ugandans learn business and entrepreneurial skills. They open bank accounts. And 18 months after joining BeadforLife’s program, each graduate is expected to launch her own small business in her community.

Thursday Giveaway…
This week, one lucky winner will take home this treasure trove of goodies courtesy of Beadaholique ! Aren’t they generous? This is one incredible prize! Up for grabs is an assortment of beads and jewelry-making supplies that were inspired by autumn. I love all the rich, earthy colors. Make sure to swing by to check out these leafy components and other great deals available at Beadaholique . Since there is quite a lot, I decided to break it down a bit. I think it shows just what an awesome prize this is! The Beadaholique crew included some colored filigree stampings from Ezel Designs . They are lightweight and can easily be layered like I did in these earrings . Use them to frame and accentuate another component or let them stand alone. Carved stone leaves add a little bit of luxury to any design. I marveled at this assortment, mixing and matching them to create different effects. Some could be used as pendants, others could be turned into sumptuous bracelet and earring designs.

Nothing, But It Was Good
Tonight was filled with nothing. I got home late and found Papa and the girls relaxing in the basement, with Cassidy making paper beads and Cailin sniffling through the cold she has been fighting since Saturday. After a 2 1/2 hour drive home , which fell on the heels of a 3 hour meeting, which had been preceded by a 2 1/2 hour drive there , I was a tad bit lazy sleepy, and ever so grateful for the white chicken chili in the crockpot. I kissed the girls, heard some stories about bus and boys drama (one and the same… life lesson 12,001… when one boy tells another boy that you like him, boy #1 really likes you and is testing the waters), and crashed for a few minutes to read email and blogs. Cailin joined me while I cleaned the kitchen and shared more about her day and her school work, or lack of it, which is an entirely other post. Cassidy had expanded her paper bead jewelry making to head bands and came upstairs to snatch a few old ones for her efforts, and Cailin and I snuggled on the sofa.

In the title of this blog post, I was going to mention Robyn Hawk’s blog or website name, but we’re talking about someone who maintains not one or two blogs, but multiple blogs and facebook pages !! This is quite a feat and I am sitting here in awe… Robyn provides the beading and jewelry making world with a wealth of information! Here are a handful of her sites: The Daily Jewel AFlyOnTheWall Posterous Views & Reviews Tucson Gem Show In her profile on the blog, “A Fly On The Wall”, she writes, “I hope to give you a “fly on the wall” view of the things that are important in my life…jewelry, art, people, adventure!
